Blog #3

Fifty years ago you would find American couples meeting in different places, bars, clubs, restaraunts, etc. Nowadays, you see many other relationships starting somewhere else, online. In the movie Second Skin you see many couples that are now dating or even engaged that have met in an MMORPG. Massivley multiplayer online role-playing games have taken off as a place for people to make friends or even meet future husbands/wives. Technology has completely changed the way we live, if you would've said to people 20 years ago that they could possibly meet the love of your life online they would've laughed at you. Now, its very common. In Culture Jam, Lasn talks about how technology is bad and is changing Americans to be lazy. It has, but it is very beneficial for us. In the movie we might've found it funny about the couples and how much they played but for them, they are happy as can be. Which in the end, isn't that what all of us Americans are on, the pursuit of happiness?

  1. I like how you ended with the question about the pursuit of happiness. I do agree, that we all want to have happiness, it just depends on what people define as there happiness. Everyone has different things that make them and for the people in second skin, it was the game. Even though, I do think that some of the people joined the game because they were unhappy with their real life and could create a better virtual one.

  2. I think that one thing that Lasn constantly ignores is that "the times, they are a changin" and the fact of the matter is that people meet online all the time. That being said, I think that face to face interaction an irreplacable part of any relationship, so as long as people meet up, maybe the medium doesn't matter so much? just a thought. But I think that most people dont play WOW to find love...so its still a weird thing to be addicted to.

  3. I like that you mentioned how different dating and meeting people was 50 years ago versus todays world of meeting on online dating sites and mmorpg's, which are two completely different styles of people, but as you said, if playing the games and meeting people online is what makes people happy who are we to judge?

  4. What I keep finding is that the way people are wording their posts about finding love on WoW, now i'm not saying people don't find it in game, but in essence it is a game the love thing is just a side effect. Finding love though has changed drastically and I agree with you, but lets leave that to the dating sites. But hey as long as they're happy who cares

  5. I agree that people have started to find love in video games and we wouldn't have guessed this would ever happen 50 years ago. I think it's weird that this happens but if it works for them then it works for them.
